The Spark: Turning Bubbles into Strategy

The Global Game Jam at our college was an intense, 48-hour challenge where creativity and strategy had to merge under the theme Bubbles. What started as a seemingly lighthearted concept quickly evolved into Popportunity a deep, strategic card game designed for grown-ups. It wasnt just about popping bubbles; it was about trust, strategy, and smart decision-making.

The Design Journey: From Ideation to Strategy

Brainstorming Begins

  • Six UX designers, fueled by caffeine and curiosity, started with a random word generator.

  • The challenge: How can “bubbles” inspire a compelling game ?

  • Over 50 ideas emerged in rapid-fire ideation rounds

  • Iterative refinements were made based on testing insights before finalizing the concept.

User Testing the Concepts

Following testing with mentors and volunteers, Popportunity emerged as the most balanced and exciting concept. We’ve since refined the mechanics based on their strategic feedback to finalize the game.

Crafting the Game Concept

Popportunity is a tactical mental battle that balances ethical gameplay with high-stakes risk. The tension peaks at 17 points in the Bubble Zone, where a daring mechanic allows players to swap scores if both play a Bubble. It’s the ultimate test of trust: cooperate strategically, or risk losing everything in a single gamble.

Packaging: Convenience Meets Style

  • Inspired by traditional card games but customized to align with Popportunity’s unique identity.

  • Hybrid packaging: A full box for the complete game and a portable cardholder for quick play.

Gameplay: Strategy and Fun in Action

The Team: Collaboration, Learning, and Growth

  • Led a team of seniors, each bringing unique strengths to the project.

  • Rapid decision-making was crucial under intense time constraints.

  • Constant learning and adaptation made the experience both challenging and rewarding.

Final Takeaway

Popportunity started as a simple ideation challenge but transformed into a fully realized card game. The journey underscored the power of teamwork, creative problem-solving, and thinking beyond the obvious. This experience was more than just about creating a game it was about pushing creative limits, taking risks, and learning what it truly means to build something meaningful under pressure.
